Friends and Family in Recovery Support Group

Participants in support meetings may be loved ones, family members, friends, and caretakers, of someone with a substance use disorder. Their loved one with an addiction may be at any stage- in active use, in recovery, passed away, or any other stage in between. The goal is to support friends and family as they learn to cope, manage, communicate, navigate resources, establish boundaries, and gain strength through a community of people with shared experiences.

Meetings will last 1.5 hours and occur in multiple locations throughout Manatee County, with the goal of hosting one meeting per week in each location. The number of meetings to begin with will depend on the number of hosting locations and availability of facilitators. Each meeting will be structured in two parts- half of the meeting will consist of a group dialogue, status updates, and check-in. The second half of the meeting will consist of a semi-structured presentation focused on education, resource sharing, and SMART Friends and Family Groups curriculum. Once a month the curriculum/presentation portion may be provided by a guest speaker with a particular recovery-related expertise or lived experience.

Meeting locations and weekly topics will be posted on a monthly event calendar online where participants can register in advance for a meeting and decide which meetings are the best fit for them. Participation will be capped at 20 people per meeting. Location, frequency, and topics may change over time depending on emerging needs and demands.
